Ocean Jasper Slab

Ocean Jasper Slab

The original deposits were found along the coast and could only be mined at low tide. This gave the stone mystique in the lapidary world. Later inland deposits were discovered, but the stone remains exclusive to Madagascar.

Popularized globally in the early 2000s by gem dealers; it quickly became an iconic Madagascar export, alongside Labradorite and Rose Quartz.

Known locally for many years but rediscovered for international markets in 1999 when deposits became accessible at low tide. Called “Ocean Jasper” because the deposits were found only along the seashore, accessible by boat at certain times of the tide.

At the time of this writing origial "ocean jasper" has been mined out, many jaspers appearing on the market under the name ocean jasper are from a "new" deposit and looks different from the original mined at low tide. I beleive this slab is from the newer deposit, I'm looking for origial "old stock" but it is becoming quite rare.
